The Electronic Communications Office of Iceland (ECOI) has now assumed leadership of Eyvör NCC-IS, Iceland’s national cybersecurity competence centre, and welcomes the changes announced at a meeting on Monday between the Minister of Infrastructure, the board, steering committee, and advisory council of Eyvör.

Among the main changes are the appointment of a new board, the signing of updated grant allocation rules for cybersecurity funding, and the decision that the competence centre will formally operate under the Electronic Communications Office of Iceland.

ECOI views this as a natural and positive development in the evolution of cybersecurity efforts in Iceland. By combining the strengths of the agency and Eyvör, new opportunities arise to enhance the nation’s capacity to respond to an increasingly complex cybersecurity environment.

Eyvör NCC-IS is part of the European cybersecurity network coordinated by the European Cybersecurity Competence Centre (ECCC). The centre is a collaborative initiative between the Ministry of Infrastructure, ECOI, the Icelandic Centre for Research (Rannís), the University of Iceland, Reykjavík University, and Auðna. Its mission is to strengthen expertise, research, and innovation in the field of cybersecurity.

These partners have received direct funding from the European Union to enhance the universities’ cybersecurity capabilities, build national knowledge in cybersecurity, promote stronger dialogue between government and industry, and increase Nordic cooperation in this area.

Eyvör’s goal is to strengthen research, education, and training in cybersecurity, as well as to facilitate access for Icelandic stakeholders to international opportunities. Among its key activities is the management of cybersecurity grants for projects that contribute to increased competence and capability in the field.

ECOI now leads Eyvör’s operations and is responsible for coordinating initiatives and promoting a strong cybersecurity culture in Iceland. The centre has already begun awarding grants to projects that strengthen cybersecurity capacity.

The new Eyvör NCC-IS board, appointed for a two-year term, is as follows:

  • Hrafnkell V. Gíslason, Director of the Electronic Communications Office of Iceland (Chair)
  • Aðalsteinn Þorsteinsson, Director at the Ministry of Infrastructure
  • Bryndís Björk Ásgeirsdóttir, Dean of the School of Social Sciences, Reykjavík University
  • Sigurður Magnús Garðarsson, Dean of the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences, University of Iceland
  • Sigurður Óli Sigurðsson, Director of Research and Innovation, Rannís

ECOI looks forward to leading the continued development of Eyvör and to strengthening cybersecurity awareness, capacity, and innovation within Icelandic society.
